Hi, I’m Toby McDonald, from St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.

 

I am a lawyer and curl at the Bally Haly Golf & Curling Club.  I am married to Noreen Byrne.  I have two children, Sarah McDonald and Mark McDonald, and one grandchild, Gwen.

 

Curling & Coaching Career Highlights and Awards:

  • Coach of Team Gushue, 2005 Canadian Olympic Trials and 2006 Olympic Champions
  • Third on 1976 Canadian MacDonald Brier Champions and appeared at Air Canada Silver Broom
  • Skip of 2012 Canadian Masters Championship Team from Nfld. & Lab.
  • Recipient of Ross Harstone Sportsmanship Award at Labatt Brier (1998)
  • Recipient of Martin Bailey Sportsmanship Award  at Canadian Masters (2012)
  • Coach of the Canadian Men’s University Champions (MUN) (2011)
  • Member of the Governor General’s Curling Club since 2008
  • Honorary Life Member of St. John’s Curling Club (Nfld.), the Beausejour Curling Club (N.B.) and the Carol Curling Club (Lab.)
  • Represented the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador nationally over 6 decades at the Pepsi Juniors, Canada Winter Games, Brier, Mixed, World Championships, Olympic Trials, Olympics, University Championship and Masters and appeared at the Brier under the sponsorship of MacDonalds, Labatts, Nokia and Tim Hortons

 

Involvement at Curling Club and Association levels: 

 

Past President of MUN Curling Club; Director and Curling Capt @ St. John’s CC;  Founder and Past President of St. John’s CC Men’s Superleague and Travelspiel; Eastern Zone Director NLCA; Drawmaster for various clubs and spiels; Co-Chairman of 2011 Canadian University Curling Championships.

Named Queen’s Council; Recipient of Gordon M. Stirling Distinguished Service Award from Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador; Recipient of Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws (MUN); Recipient of Memorial University Luminus Award. An avid fly fisherman, particularly for salmon and trout in NL and snook in Florida.
